NEW YORK - Four different runners established new personal bests in their respective events as Villanova wrapped up two days of competition in the Armory Invitational on Saturday afternoon. A total of eight athletes competed in six different events for the Wildcats throughout the day at the New York Armory in the team's final meet before the BIG EAST Championships later this month.
Junior Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) was the runner-up in the championship section of the 800 meters and registered a time of 1:49.86. He was running his first 800 meters race of the indoor season and gave a very strong effort, finishing less than half a second off the winning pace.
Villanova competed in two championship events on Saturday, including the Mile in addition to the 800 meters. Junior Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) competed in the championship Mile and came in 10th with a time of 4:10.38.
The best race of the night for the Wildcats came from sophomore Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the college section of the Mile. Solis won for the third time in four races this season and also set a personal best time in the Mile for the third consecutive race. He crossed the finish line in 4:07.03 on Saturday and was more than seven seconds faster than in his previous Mile two weeks ago. Solis paced a field of 63 runners to earn the victory by a margin of nearly five seconds. Sophomore Charlie Bates (Hoboken, N.J.) came in 21st in the field with a time of 4:16.67.
Senior Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore Tom Trainer (Havertown, Pa.) both ran personal best times in the college section of the 3000 meters. They did so while crossing the finish line less than two-tenths of a second apart and the pair placed second and third, respectively, in a field of 20 runners. Kane was the individual runner-up in the race with a time of 8:25.66 and Trainer was just behind him in 8:25.84.
In the college section of the 5000 meters senior John Pickhaver (Drexel Hill, Pa.) tied for third place out of 20 runners with a personal best time of 14:38.77. Pickhaver had previously raced in the 5000 meters at the Armory two weeks ago and he cut almost eight seconds off his time from that competition with tonight's performance.
Senior Philip O'Connell (Rye, N.Y.) competed in the college section of the 800 meters and registered a season best time of 1:55.80 while coming in 24th out of 73 competitors.
Villanova returns to action at the BIG EAST Championships, which take place on February 16-17 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
