UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--Freshman Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) set a meet record in the 3000 meters and sophomore Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) posted a time of 4:00.18 in the Mile at the Penn State National on Saturday afternoon. The second and final day of competition at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track produced a number of strong performances for the Wildcats, who also won the 4x800 meter relay.

Tiernan won the invitational section of the 3000 meters with a personal best time of 7:57.75 and set a new facility and meet record in the process. He did so in dramatic fashion by holding off Erik Olson of Stanford by just three-hundredths of a second at the finish line to secure the first place finish. Tiernan eclipsed the previous building record of 7:58.51 which had been held by Robert Gary of Adidas for 14 years.

In his first race of the indoor season Tiernan soared up the national rankings in the 3000 meters. His time currently ranks fifth in the nation this season, pending the results of other races from around the country this weekend. Tiernan also put up the third-fastest 3000 meters time by a Villanova runner in the past five years.

Senior Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia) and junior Brian Basili (South Orange, N.J.) were also running in the 3000 meters and finished fourth (8:02.07) and 16th (8:19.59), respectively. McEntee is one of the two Wildcats to run a faster time recently than Tiernan did, as his personal best of 7:54.34 was set at the Husky Classic last season. The time for Basili is a new personal best and nearly eight full seconds faster than the time he posted at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational two seasons ago.

Williamsz provided one of the other highlights of the day for Villanova by finishing second in the invitational section of the Mile. His time of 4:00.18 ranks fourth in the nation and is the second-fastest time of his career in an open race. Williamsz came back strong after running the 1200 meter leadoff leg of the distance medley relay last night. He trailed only Brannon Kidder of host Penn State in the race.

Senior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) ran in the invitational section of the 800 meters and tied for fourth place with a time of 1:49.35. Ellison ran in the faster of two heats and was in a tight race, with the top six runners being separated by less than half a second at the finish line. Billy Ledder of Georgetown finished first in 1:48.92 and was followed by Andrew Smith of UMBC (1:49.15), Edward Kemboi of Iowa State (1:49.22), Ellison and Za'Von Watkins of Penn State (1:49.35).

In the invitational section of the 1000 meters redshirt freshman Josh Lampron (Mansfield, Mass.) came in third out of six runners. His time of 2:24.57 was a personal best and more than two seconds faster than he ran at the Gotham Cup meet earlier this season.

The other first place finish for the Wildcats on Saturday came in the invitational section of the 4x800 meter relay. Villanova posted a time of 7:36.41 and posted a margin of victory of nearly nine full seconds in a race that featured junior Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) as the anchor behind a lineup of seniors Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) and Chris FitzSimons (Hamden, Conn.), as well as freshman Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.).

Next up for the Wildcats is the Armory Collegiate Invitational next Friday and Saturday (February 7-8) in New York.
