UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.--In the invitational section of the distance medley relay at time of 9:36.89 put Villanova in fifth place in the nation to this point in the season. The time was good for a third place finish for the Wildcats, who opened two days of competition at the Penn State National with five events at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Friday night.

Villanova was part of a strong field in the DMR and trailed only host Penn State (9:26.59) and Stanford (9:28.95) at the finish line. Sophomore Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) led off the relay for the Wildcats and was followed by freshman Ayomide Obadare (Elmont, N.Y.), senior Chris FitzSimons (Hamden, Conn.) and sophomore Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.).

Prior to this evening's race only two faster times had been run in the nation this season and both (by Virginia and Illinois, respectively) were less than a second faster than the time Villanova recorded on Friday night. The winning time for Penn State in the meet is faster than any team ran last season.

A second DMR entry competed in the unseeded section of the race for the Wildcats and came in second with a time of 9:52.64. Junior Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led off that relay ahead of freshman Peter Winslow (Stratham, N.H.), senior Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) and graduate student Mike Palmisano (Dresher, Pa.).

Villanova competed in three other events to open the meet, including individual running event and two field events. Junior Tom Trainer (Havertown, Pa.) came in 17th in the invitational section of the 5000 meters and registered a time of 15:12.36.

In the field events senior Chris Dougherty (Cherry Hill, N.J.) tied for eighth place in the invitational section of the pole vault (4.51 meters) and junior Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came in 14th in the long jump (6.98 meters).

Action resumes on Saturday morning and will continue throughout the day and early evening. Occasional updates will be available on Saturday by following @NovaTrackXC and a full recap of the day's events will be posted online late Saturday night.
