Wildcats Add Nine to Postseason List at Penn State National Open
Jan. 27, 2008
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- An outstanding race in the 400 meter dash for Villanova junior Elvis Lewis (West Hempstead, N.Y.) was the top result of the day and overall the Wildcats added nine entries to their list of qualifiers for postseason meets this weekend at the Penn State National Open. The event was held over the past two days at the Horace Ashenfelter Track.
Lewis placed second out of 13 runners in the invitational section of the 400 meters and came within a fraction of a second of posting an NCAA provisional qualifying time. His mark of 47.46 puts him in line for the Big East meet next month and was just 0.21 seconds off the provisional standard. In the non-invitational flight of the race, freshman Garrett Kroner (Oakland, N.J.) posted a time of 48.87 and finished seventh among 31 runners in his race.
Villanova also received strong performances in the 1000 meter run, including a first-place showing for senior Michael Kerrigan (Stroudsburg, Pa.) and a third-place crossing for classmate Mark Korich (Wyndmoor, Pa.). Kerrigan led 11 competitors in the invitational portion with a time of 2:26.59 and Korich was just behind with a mark of 2:26.90. Juniors Kyle Audi (Loudonville, N.Y.) and William Sepich (Delran, N.J.) each earned Big East qualifications with times of 2:29.40 and 2:29.41, respectively.
Senior Patrick Gazzini (Somers, N.Y.) lowered his fastest season time in the 60 meter hurdles to 8.16 and was one of 16 runners in a field of 39 to advance at least to the semifinals. Junior Elliot Whaley (Yeadon, Pa.) lowered his best time of the season to 8.46.
The Wildcats were particularly strong in the short and middle distance events. In the 800 meters, senior John Morse (South Elgin, Ill.) qualified for the Big East meet with a time of 1:05.17 that placed him seventh out of 29 runners in the non-invitational flight. Junior Sean Tully (Syosset, N.Y.) was similarly impressive in the 800 meters, with a time of 1:50.73 to come in fourth out of 11 runners.
In the 3000 meter run, senior Geoffrey Doody (Atlanta, Ga.) came in seventh out of 16 runners with a postseason qualifying time of 8:20.93.
