McEntee and Sheridan Notch Wins at Albany Great Dane Invitational
Jan. 21, 2012
NEW YORK--Villanova competed very well across the board in the Albany Great Dane Invitational but saved its best performances for the distance events en route to a fifth place finish out of 26 teams at the New York Armory on Friday evening. Sophomore Samuel McEntee (Perth, Australia) won the 3000 meters and graduate student Ryan Sheridan (Melville, N.Y.) captured the 5000 meters to lead the team.
"All in all this was a good meet for us," head coach Marcus O'Sullivan said. "We added several more postseason qualifiers and got good efforts from all of the guys that ran in the distance events, with a number of personal best times."
Team points were awarded for finishing in the top eight of each event and the Wildcats finished with 46.5 points after managing 10 top-eight finishes in seven different events. The points came from four running events and three field events.
In the 3000 meters McEntee crossed the finish line with a personal best time of 8:13.93 and paced a field of 39 runners. It was the first race of the indoor season for McEntee, a BIG EAST scorer in the Mile last season and who was one of the most consistent runners for the Villanova cross country team this fall.
Sheridan also opened up his indoor season and finished first out of 21 runners in the 5000 meters while headlining a group of four Wildcats that all placed in the top five. Sheridan crossed the finish line in 14:18.66, sophomore Greg Morrin (Hockessin, Del.) was third (14:37.33), junior Matt Kane (Fairfield, Conn.) finished fourth (14:38.50) and redshirt freshman Brian Basili (South Orange, N.J.) took fifth place (14:38.68).
Villanova scored points in both the Mile and the 1000 meters, with juniors Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) and Joseph LoRusso (Oak Hill, Va.) both running well in the Mile. Tully finished sixth out of 39 runners with a time of 4:12.88 and LoRusso was ninth overall (4:13.69) after coming in first of 13 in his individual heat. In the 1000 meters, redshirt freshman Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) came in eighth with a time of 2:32.69.
In the field events senior Frank Anuszewski (Pottstown, Pa.) registered a distance of 16.48 meters in the weight throw to finish in sixth place out of 19 competitors. Sophomore Chris Dougherty (Cherry Hill, N.J.) matched the personal best height of 4.50 meters that he established last week in the pole vault and came in eighth out of 20, while freshman Matthew Sidney (Canton, Mass.) tied for eighth place in the high jump by clearing a height of 1.96 meters.
Next up on the schedule for the Wildcats is the Penn State National next Friday and Saturday.
NOTES: In addition to the team performances Villanova also had freshmen Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and Tom Trainer (Havertown, Pa.) competing as unattached entries in the 3000 meters ... Both recorded personal best times in their races, with Denault coming in second (8:15.72) and Trainer placing eighth (8:28.51).
