Men's Track Captures Distance Medley Relay at Gotham Cup
Jan. 16, 2012
NEW YORK--In its return to action the Villanova men's track & field team picked up a victory in the distance medley relay and had a number of strong performances at the Gotham Cup, held at the New York Armory on Friday afternoon and evening. Among the individual highlights for the Wildcats included sophomore Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) winning his heat of the 1000 meters.
The distance medley relay team of redshirt freshman Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.), freshman Cory Serfoss (Easton, Pa.), redshirt freshman Chris Fitzsimons (Hamden, Conn.) and junior Alex Tully (Little Rock, Ark.) recorded a time of 10:13.58 and cruised to a wide margin of victory.
On the individual side Ellison crossed the finish line in 2:27.47 in the 1000 meters, winning his heat of nine runners by a margin of more than a second. His time was also a BIG EAST Championships and IC4A Championship qualifying time. Ellison was one of 55 athletes to compete in one of six heats in the 1000 meters and his time placed him eighth overall. He led a contingent of three Villanova runners in the event. Redshirt freshman Dusty Solis (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also won his heat and was 15th overall, while junior Philip O'Connell (Rye, N.Y.) ranked 21st in the field of 55 runners with a time of 2:33.73.
In the unseeded section of the Mile the trio of O'Sullivan and fellow redshirt freshmen Dan Harris (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Richie Bohny (Holmdel, N.J.) all posted strong results. O'Sullivan and Bohny each established new personal bests in the Mile and O'Sullivan came in second overall from an original field of 71 competitors with a time of 4:15.02. O'Sullivan's time qualified him for the BIG EAST meet. Harris placed fourth overall and won his heat with a mark of 4:21.03 and Bohny followed in seventh place overall with a time of 4:22.56. Bohny erased his old personal best - 4:27, set during high school -- by more than four seconds.
Senior Frank Anuszewski (Pottstown, Pa.) came in third in the weight throw with a distance of 16.68 meters to lead several strong individual efforts in the field events. Sophomore Chris Dougherty (Cherry Hill, N.J.) cleared a personal best height of 4.50 meters in the pole vault and senior George Bodziock (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) established a personal best mark of 13.25 meters in the triple jump. Freshman Matthew Sidney (Canton, Mass.) posted a BIG EAST Championships qualifying mark of 2.01 meters in the high jump and tied for sixth place out of 24 competitors in the event.
