Men’s Track & Field Earns 16 All-BIG EAST Honors
The official list of all-conference performers from last weekend’s outdoor BIG EAST Championships was announced on Tuesday afternoon, and the Villanova men’s track & field team had 11 student-athletes combine to earn 16 All-BIG EAST honors during the conference meet. Headlining the list were the three athletes who won individual events during the meet, as well as the Wildcats champion 4x800 meter relay squad.
Cartwright, Wetzel and 4x800 Meter Relay Win BIG EAST Titles
Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) won the BIG EAST title in the 1500 meters and also anchored Villanova to a championship in the 4x800 meter relay as the BIG EAST Championships wrapped up at a cold and wet Villanova Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Senior sprinter Kyle Cartwright (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) was the champion of the 400 meter hurdles for the second time in his career and the Wildcats finished third in the team standings to make the awards podium for the fourth straight year.
Conboy and Judge Star on First Day of BIG EAST Championships
Freshman Thomas Conboy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) won the BIG EAST title in the pole vault and sophomore thrower Jack Judge (Palisades, N.Y.) was the runner-up in the javelin as the BIG EAST Championships got underway at Villanova Stadium on Friday afternoon. With seven events scored, the Wildcats have 36 points and are in third place going into tomorrow’s second and final day of action.
Villanova to Host BIG EAST Track & Field Championships This Weekend
Wildcats Score Two Wins at Jim Kehoe Invitational
Sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) and redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) won the 800 meters and the 1500 meters, respectively, at the Jim Kehoe Invitational at Maryland’s Kehoe Track & Field Complex on Friday night. Villanova had a total of six athletes competing in the meet.
Penn Relays: Men’s 4x800 Meter Relay Finishes Fourth
In the team’s final race of the weekend, Villanova finished fourth in the men’s Championship of America 4x800 meter relay at Franklin Field on Saturday afternoon. Redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.), sophomore Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland), junior Ishmael Muhammad (Mays Landing, N.J.) and sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) registered a time of 7:21.18 in a race packed with some of the nation’s top teams.
Penn Relays: Men's DMR Team Finishes Tallies Fifth Place Finish
Villanova returned three of its four runners in the same position as last season in the Championship of America distance medley relay on Friday afternoon and found itself in a fast and physical race from the outset at Franklin Field in the 123rd running of the Penn Relays. The quartet of junior Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.), sophomore Harry Purcell (Dublin, Ireland), sophomore Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) and redshirt freshman Logan Wetzel (Saline, Mich.) tallied a fifth place finish in 9:34.59 in the Wildcats first big race of the weekend.
Penn Relays: Thomas Conboy Soars to Personal Best in Pole Vault
On a busy day of events at the 123rd running of the Penn Relays, freshman Thomas Conboy (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) tallied one of the standout performances for Villanova with a new personal best height in the pole vault. Two individual races, three relays and two field events made up the Wildcats scheduled at Franklin Field on Friday afternoon. Of note, the team’s entry in the Championship of America distance medley relay registered a fifth place finish in a fast and physical race.
