Patrick Tiernan Finishes Third in 5000 Meters at NCAA Championships
Senior distance runner Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) had the lead for much of the race and still had something left in the tank to close strong and finish third in the 5000 meters at the NCAA Championships on Friday night. This is the best career NCAA finish on the track either indoors or outdoors for Tiernan, who scored in the 5000 meters outdoors with a top-eight finish for the second time in three years. Senior middle distance runner Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) ran in the final of the 1500 meters at Hayward Field and registered a ninth place finish.
Jordy Williamsz Advances to Final of 1500 Meters at NCAA Championships
Middle distance runners Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) and Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) were on the track for Villanova in the semifinal heats of the 1500 meters as the NCAA Championships got underway at Hayward Field on Wednesday afternoon. Both runners finished sixth in their respective heats and Williamsz advanced on time to Friday evening’s final, where he will compete for the national title in the 1500 meters for the third consecutive season. Malone, who came on strong this season to earn his first individual qualifying spot at the NCAA meet, had an incredible final lap but came up just short of moving on to the final by the most miniscule of margins.
Tiernan, Malone and Williamsz Head to NCAA Championships This Week
A trio of Villanova distance runners are headed to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week, as senior Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia), senior Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) will compete at the national meet in Eugene, Ore. beginning on Wednesday afternoon. Tiernan is a qualifier for the NCAA Championships in the 5000 meters for the third straight year, while Williamsz and Malone will each compete in the 1500 meters. Williamsz is also returning to the national championships for a third straight season, while Malone qualified as an individual for the NCAA meet for the first time.
Tiernan, Malone and Williamsz All Punch Tickets to NCAA Championships
Villanova had three runners in competition at the NCAA East Preliminary on Saturday night and all three punched tickets to the national championships in Oregon next month by advancing out of their respective heats at Hodges Stadium. Sophomore Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) and senior Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) were each automatic qualifiers for the NCAA meet in the 1500 meters and senior Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) was an automatic qualifier in the 5000 meters.
Malone and Williamsz Advance in 1500 Meters at NCAA East Preliminary
Sophomore Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) and senior Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) each advanced in the 1500 meters during competition in the national first round heats of the event at the NCAA East Preliminary on Thursday evening. Both runners were automatic qualifiers for the quarterfinal round by finishing in the top five of their respective heats at Hodges Stadium. Freshman Ville Lampinen (Vantaa, Finland) was also in action for the Wildcats in the first round of the 800 meters later on Thursday.
Men's Track & Field Qualifies Four for NCAA East Preliminary
The accepted entries for the NCAA East Preliminary were revealed on Thursday afternoon and Villanova has four men’s track & field athletes headed to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the early rounds of the national championships next week. This is the third straight year that the East Preliminary meet will head to Hodges Stadium on the University of North Florida campus. The meet takes place next Thursday through Saturday, May 26-28.
Pierce Named Most Outstanding Track Performer at BIG EAST Championships
Freshman sprinter Sterling Pierce (Voorhees, N.J.) swept the conference titles in the 100 meters and the 200 meters, and was named the Men’s Most Outstanding Track Performer as the BIG EAST Championships came to a close at the SPIRE Institute on Saturday afternoon. Villanova won six of the 15 events that were scored on the second day of the meet to finish second in the team standings with 179 points. Pierce is the Wildcats first athlete since 2007 to be named the Most Outstanding Track Performer at the outdoor conference meet.
Men's Track & Field in Second Place After Day One of BIG EAST Championships
The first day of action at the outdoor BIG EAST Track & Field Championships is in the books and Villanova has already had five athletes make the awards podium by finishing in the top three of their respective events. As a team, the Wildcats scored 60 points in the seven events that were scored on Friday and are in second place heading into the second and final day of action. There are 15 events remaining to be scored.
