Men's Track & Field Starts Strong at Jack Pyrah Invitational
Sophomore thrower Henry Sise (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) finished first in the shot put and Villanova registered a total of nine top-three finishes at the Jack Pyrah Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The first meet of the 2016-17 indoor season was a good one for the Wildcats, who had athletes competing in eight different at Alumni Gym on the Haverford campus. Villanova hosted the first of three home meets this season and had seven different athletes make their official collegiate debuts during the competition.
Track & Field Teams to Host Jack Pyrah Invitational on Saturday
The indoor track & field season will officially kick off this weekend as Villanova hosts the annual Jack Pyrah Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The meet takes place in Alumni Gym at Haverford College and will begin with field events at 11 a.m., followed by the start of running events at 12 p.m.
Marcus O'Sullivan Inducted to Athletics Ireland Hall of Fame
Villanova men’s track & field head coach Marcus O’Sullivan was inducted to the Athletics Ireland Hall of Fame on Wednesday morning at the Irish Life Health National Athletics Awards. He earned the top honor at the annual awards ceremony while surrounded by some of the most legendary figures that have been a part of the Wildcats storied track & field history. Also honored as part of the Hall of Fame festivities was fellow Villanovan and O’Sullivan’s one-time coach, Donal Walsh. The inductions and other annual awards were presented by Athletics Ireland at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood.
Rio Update: Tiernan and McEntee on the Track, USA Basketball Rolls On
It will be a busy day for Villanova athletes at the Summer Olympics in Rio on Wednesday, as Australian runners Patrick Tiernan and Sam McEntee were on the track for the first round of the 5000 meters in the morning and Team USA featuring Kyle Lowry will take on Argentina in a men’s basketball quarterfinal contest later in the day.
Sam McEntee and Patrick Tiernan Named to Australia Olympic Team
A pair of Villanova teammates and countrymen were each officially named to the Australian Olympic Team on Wednesday afternoon and will represent their country at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil next month. Current senior Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) and 2015 graduate Sam McEntee (Perth, Australia) were among the country’s 61 selections to the Olympic team in Athletics. They will each run the 5000 meters in Rio.

The summer season is always a busy one for the Wildcats track & field athletes, but never more so than in an Olympic year. Starting in late March when 2015 graduate Sam McEntee won the 5000 meters at the Australian Athletics Championships, current and former members of the Villanova track & field program have been making headlines around the world at Olympic Trials and other elite international competitions.
Rob Denault and Patrick Tiernan Named to Academic All-Area Track & Field Team
Senior distance runners Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) were each named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team for track & field in an announcement made on Friday morning. Both student-athletes also earned the honor for cross country back in the fall. The Academic All-Area teams in each sport are voted on by the sports information directors at the Philadelphia area colleges and universities, and take into account both academic and athletic achievements.
Patrick Tiernan Earns First Team All-America Honors in 5000 Meters
The list of All-Americans for the outdoor track & field season was announced on Monday afternoon by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and Villanova had three athletes garner All-America honors. Senior distance runner Patrick Tiernan (Toowoomba, Australia) earned first team All-America recognition in the 5000 meters, while senior Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia) and sophomore Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) were second team and honorable mention selections, respectively, in the 1500 meters.
