Joining the Wildcats coaching staff in 2013 is Mark Carberry, who is a former Villanova student-athlete. Carberry will be the top assistant coach for Marcus O'Sullivan and will be involved in day-to-day aspects of the cross country and track & field programs.
Carberry returns to the Wildcats after spending three years as the associate head coach at St. Mary's (Calif.). He oversaw all of the Gaels recruiting efforts as well as the development of both the men's cross country and track & field programs during his time at St. Mary's.
The men's cross country team at St. Mary's set multiple school records during Carberry's tenure, with All-West Coast Conference first team honoree Rajpaul Pannu establishing new school marks on both 8,000 and 10,000 meter courses during the 2012 season. Pannu earned USTFCCCA All-West honors in 2012, while Nick Ellingson and Zach Hansen set the sophomore and freshman class records at both distances. As a team, the Gaels finished in sixth place at the WCC championships, their best finish in over a decade.
In 2011 the cross country team saw huge gains from a large freshman class along with improvement from the squad's upperclassmen. On the track that year the men's team set new school records in the 800 meters, 3000 meters steeplechase and 5000 meters.
Carberry arrived at St. Mary's in 2010 and the cross country team made immediate gains with a seventh place finish at the conference meet and a 25th place finish at the NCAA West regional. He also had oversight for managing a newly-defined Gaels program and instituted a new approach to performance analysis and rehab techniques for the St. Mary's student-athletes.
Prior to his stint at St. Mary's, Carberry was the top assistant coach and the co-director of recruiting for the men's cross country and track & field program at Tufts. He was responsible for recruiting and coaching the middle distance and distance runners at Tufts and was the primary coach for eight NCAA Division III All-Americans and a total of 15 national qualifiers. During the 2010 outdoor season Jesse Faller recorded the fastest 5,000 meters time in the country.
Carberry began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach for the Rocky Hill (Conn.) high school team, where he helped to produce a state champion in the 400 meters and worked extensively with the group of distance runners.
As a collegiate student-athlete Carberry was a four-year member of the Villanova cross country and track & field teams. He earned All-BIG EAST honors as a member of the Wildcats 4x800 meter relay as both a junior and a senior, as well as individually in the 1000 meters his senior year.
Carberry graduated from Villanova in 2004 with a degree in Political Science and Economics. He went on to receive a Master's degree in Political Science from Florida State in 2008 and a Master's in Educational Studies with an emphasis on Physical Education and Coaching Development from Tufts in 2010. Carberry holds a USATF Level 1 coaching certification.
