Wildcats Drop Two Tight Matches During Homecoming Weekend

Oct. 8, 2007

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Despite Villanova freshman Trenton Alenik recording wins in both matches this weekend, the Wildcats dropped two tight decisions to opponents Delaware and Marist to fall to 0-2. The Fightin' Blue Hens of Delaware staged a late rally to slip past Villanova 4-3 on Saturday at the West Campus Tennis Complex. On Sunday, the Wildcats traveled to Marist where they dropped a 6-1 decision and saw two singles matches go into three sets.

Delaware jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking the No. 1 and 2 doubles spots during Saturday's competition. Villanova's Alex Leeser and David Shaheen secured a 9-8 (7-5) victory in the No. 3 slot, but the Wildcats surrendered the overall doubles' point, which would eventually prove to be the difference in the match, to the Fightin' Blue Hens.

Villanova's Dimitri Chimerakis and Delaware's Camilo Perez staged an outstanding match-up in No. 5 singles. As the last two players on the court, Chimerakis and Perez traded serves and points in a three set match, which ended with Perez slightly edging Chimerakis 0-6, 6-4, 7-5. As a result, the Wildcats and Fightin' Blue Hens split singles play 3-3 with Villanova claiming the No. 3, 4, and 6 spots, while Delaware took No. 1, 2, and 5 to make the final score 4-3.

Sunday's match saw much of the same action for the Wildcats as Leeser and Shaheen once again took No. 3 doubles. However, Villanova dropped the other two doubles spots to fall behind 1-0 heading into singles.

Alenik easily handled Red Fox Peter Luck in the No. 3 spot by posting scores of 6-1, 6-1. Yet, that would be the only point for the Wildcats that afternoon. Shaheen and Chimerakis put forth great efforts in No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively, but eventually surrendered their points to Marist. The Red Foxes claimed the remaining matches to cruise to a 6-1 victory over the Wildcats.

Villanova is back in action this upcoming weekend as they head south to Newport News, Va. to compete in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitation of Newport News from Friday, Oct. 12 to Sunday, Oct. 14.
