Complete Tournament Results

HAMDEN, Conn. - In the final tournament of the fall season sophomore Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) and freshman Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) captured the Flight "B" doubles title at the Quinnipiac Invitational, played at the Outdoor Tennis Facility this weekend. Individually, Peyton also was one of three Villanova players who advanced to the semifinals of their respective singles brackets.

In the Flight "B" doubles bracket Peyton and Rosengren had a bye in the first round before sweeping three straight matches to win the championship. Two of those victories came against doubles tandems from Bryant, including a convincing 8-3 win in the quarterfinals. Next up was a match against Chris Nelson and Micah Bailey of the host Bobcats, which Peyton and Rosengren won in a tiebreaker by a final score of 9-8 (7-4). In the championship match, they posted an 8-6 win over their opponents from Bryant.

Peyton won two of his three matches in the "B" singles flight. Both of his wins were in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Hart Callahan of Bryant in the first round. Peyton also beat John Lopresti (Sacred Heart) by the same 6-4, 6-2 score in the quarterfinals before being edged in a three-set tiebreaker by Emilio Teran of Boston University in the semifinals. Peyton won the first set against Teran, 6-2, before Teran came back to take the next set 7-6 (7-5) and the tiebreaker (10-7) on his way to capturing the "B" singles title.

Freshman Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) advanced to the semifinals of the Flight "C" singles draw with straight-set wins in his first two matches. He opened with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Derek Crossman (Sacred Heart) and then beat Alex Lazerowich (Quinnipiac) by a final of 6-3, 6-3. In the semifinals, Donaldson was matched up with eventual flight champion Jacob Spreyer of Connecticut and lost in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-3.

In the Flight "D" singles bracket junior Andrew Adler (Sarasota, Fla.) reached the semifinals with wins over Dan Cournoyer (Bryant) and Chris Nelson (Quinnipiac). Adler won his first round match in a tiebreaker over Cournoyer, taking the first set 6-1 and losing the second set 6-4 before winning the tiebreaker (10-8). He knocked off Nelson in straight sets in the quarterfinals (6-2, 7-5) but was defeated in a semifinal match by Josh Rubinstein of Bryant, 7-5 and 6-1. Rubinstein went on to win the "D" singles title.

Overall this weekend the Wildcats went 10-10 in singles play. In the Flight "C" draw, sophomore Matt Colonnese (Marietta, Ga.) lost his opening match but then won a pair of matches in the consolation draw and advanced to the finals of the consolation bracket. That match, scheduled against B.J. Merander of Fairfield, was ultimately not played.

Villanova also went 9-3 in doubles action for the weekend. Sophomore Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) and Colonnese reached the semifinals of the Flight "A" doubles draw, while Joseph Monaldo and senior Liam Bohonnon (Westport, Conn.) won three straight matches in the consolation bracket of the Flight "B" doubles draw. They defeated Peter Surovic and Joshua Palmer of Connecticut by an 8-5 count in the consolation finals.

The fall season was a successful one for the Wildcats, as the team combined to go 37-26 (.587) in singles play and 16-10 (.615) in doubles matches while playing in three different tournaments. The full schedule for the spring season will be announced at a later date.
