Updates Singles Brackets Through Saturday's Action

HAMDEN, Conn.--Junior Thomas O'Brien (Branford, Conn.) reached the semifinals of the Flight A singles draw and was one of four Villanova players that advanced to the semifinals of their respective brackets at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday morning and afternoon. Play in four different singles draws began on Saturday at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts and will conclude on Sunday afternoon.

The second day of competition in the three-day tournament was a terrific one for the Wildcats, who had eight players combine to go 10-6 for the day. Each of the 10 victories came in the main draws of the different flights and Villanova accounts for half of the spots in the semifinal matches that will be played when action resumes on Sunday morning.

Junior Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.), sophomore Tim Abbracciamento (Robbinsville, N.J.) and freshman Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) joined O'Brien in reaching the semifinals in their respective brackets. This quartet for the Wildcats was a combined 8-0 in Saturday's matches.

O'Brien won each of his matches in the Flight A singles draw in straight sets. He defeated Nick Sharwarko of Hartford in the opening round by a 6-3, 6-1 final and then held off Ari Richman from Hofstra by scores of 7-5 and 6-4 in the quarterfinals. O'Brien will next face Zach Morris of Bryant in the semifinals.

In the Flight B singles bracket Peyton and Seitz are in different semifinal matches and could potentially meet in the flight championship match. Peyton scored a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Alex Holdstein (Hartford) in the opening round and went on to defeat Jeremy Shuskus from Sacred Heart in a quarterfinal meeting. The scores of that match were 7-6 (4) and 6-2 and the victory marked the 40th singles win of Peyton's career. His 40 career singles victories include a 19-5 (.792) all-time mark in tournaments.

Seitz was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Garrett Lane of the host Bobcats in their first round matchup and he then knocked off Adrien Bailly from Hofstra for a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory. In the semifinals Seitz will take on Wayne Harrell from Connecticut and Peyton will face Max Vogt from Bryant.

The last semifinal berth for Villanova came in the Flight C singles bracket, where Abbracciamento defeated opponents from Sacred Heart and Bryant. He recorded a 7-6 (4), 6-2 triumph over Kevin Budrawich (Sacred Heart) in the first round and turned in a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Vidith Huot (Bryant) in a quarterfinal match. Abbracciamento will next face Teddy Margules from Connecticut.

Sophomore Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) and freshman Max Levine (Lubbock, Texas) each won their opening round matches before falling in the quarterfinals. Rosengren beat Luka Bagi from Sacred Heart in his first Flight D match (6-4, 6-2) but lost in a tiebreaker to Devon Jerome from Quinnipiac in the quarterfinals. Jerome closed out a 6-4, 0-6 (10-8) victory. In the Flight C opening round Levine scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Andrew Ginzberg from Connecticut but was then defeated by Luke Roser from the Bobcats in straight sets. Roser won 7-6 (3), 6-1.

In the first round of the Flight A draw sophomore Mark Miller (Englewood, Colo.) lost to Sebastian Barbero from Quinnipiac in a match that was not decided until the conclusion of a long tiebreaker. Miller won the opening set by a 6-2 count but Barbero took the second set (6-3) and outlasted Miller for a 15-13 win in the tiebreaker. Miller was later defeated by Rodrigo Riberio from Bentley by a score of 8-6 in the first round of the Flight A consolation bracket.

Junior Matt Colonnese (Marietta, Ga.) lost his first round match in Flight D to Matt Dean of Sacred Heart, 6-1 and 6-2. In the consolation bracket Rhyaan Gill of Hofstra was credited with a win by default against Colonnese.

Play picks up starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning as the participating teams for the weekend wrap up play in the singles draws.
