O'Brien and Donaldson Reach Doubles Semifinals at Quinnipiac Invitational

HAMDEN, Conn.--On the first day of action at the Quinnipiac Invitational the eight participating teams started and completed all of the action in two doubles brackets and their respective main and consolation draws. Villanova had four doubles pairs in competition on Friday at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts and they combined to go 7-5 in their matches for the day.
Junior Thomas O'Brien (Branford, Conn.) and sophomore Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) reached the semifinals in the Flight A draw and finished their day with a 2-1 record. They opened up in the first round with a tidy 8-3 win over Alex Holdstein and Luis Montes from Hartford. O'Brien and Donaldson then went on to score an 8-6 victory over Antonio Pena and Joe Erichsen of Hofstra in the quarterfinals before being dealt a similarly narrow 8-6 loss in a semifinal match against the Bryant duo of Zachary Morris and Arklon Huertas Del Pino.
The duo of sophomore Mark Miller (Englewood, Colo.) and freshman Max Levine (Lubbock, Texas) also played well for the Wildcats and they emerged as the champions in the Flight B consolation bracket. In the first round of the main draw Miller and Levine pushed Matthew Gemmell and Pedro Gimenez of Hofstra to a tiebreaker before falling by a final score of 9-8 (7-2). Miller and Levine rebounded with three straight wins to win the consolation bracket however, and they finished with a 3-1 record for the day.
In the first round of the consolation draw Miller and Levine easily advanced past Matt Dean and John Lopresti of Sacred Heart by an 8-2 margin. Next up in the second round was an 8-5 decision over Marco Neves and Josh Isaacson of Hartford, while the consolation final brought another easy win by an 8-3 count against Jimmy Rindo and Alex DeMuth from Bentley.
Freshman Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) and junior Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) won their opening round match in Flight B, 8-4, against Chris Corrigan and Abdullah Abdulmohsen of Bryant. In the quarterfinals the Villanova pair was defeated in a close match by Garrett Lane and Luke Roser of the host Bobcats. Lane and Roser won by a final score of 8-6.
The final pair for the Wildcats was the sophomore duo of Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) and Tim Abbracciamento (Robbinsville, N.J.). They were defeated by an 8-6 score in the first round of the Flight A draw by Rodrigo Ribeiro and Kamil Pelch of Bentley, then split a pair of matches in the consolation rounds. Rosengren and Abbracciamento notched an 8-6 win over Jeremy Shuskus and Luka Bagi from Sacred Heart before falling in a 9-7 decision against Jordan Badenko and Nicholas Sharwarko of Hartford.
Doubles play is complete for the weekend but the eight teams competing in the three-day tournament are back in action at 8 a.m. on Saturday for the start of play in the singles draws.
