Wildcats Dominate Doubles Action at Quinnipiac Invitational
Oct. 4, 2013
HAMDEN, Conn. - The first day of action at the 2013 Quinnipiac Invitational was a successful one for the Villanova men's tennis team, as they captured both the Flights "A" and "B" doubles championships Friday afternoon at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Campus. Seven schools joined the Wildcats to kick off the tournament with only doubles action taking place.
Senior Thomas O'Brien (Branford, Conn.) joined junior Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) to defeat underclassmen teammates Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) and Bradley Noyes (Marblehead, Mass.), 8-6, in the championship match of the Flight "A" Doubles draw. The dynamic duo needed four wins to earn their third championship crown of the fall tournament season.
Seitz and Noyes recorded three victories over duos from Bentley, Hartford and UConn before falling to their teammates for the second time this fall.
Villanova would also go on to dominate and win the Flight "B" doubles draw as well. Juniors Tim Abbracciamento (Robbinsville, N.J.) and Mark Miller (Englewood, Colo.) would earn their first championship of the fall by upending teammates Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Luis Miranda (San Diego, Calif.) in the finals, 8-4. The win marked the fourth victory for the pair on the afternoon, which included wins over couples from Bentley and UConn.
In the semifinals, Peyton and Miranda took on another familiar group in fellow Wildcats, Matt Colonnese (Marietta, Ga.) and Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.). In a tough back-and-forth match, Peyton and Miranda would come out victorious by an 8-6 score.
The tournament will resume tomorrow morning with singles action slated at 9 a.m.
