Max Levine Wins Title in Third Singles Flight at Saint Joseph's Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--Freshman Max Levine (Lubbock, Texas) won the championship match of the Flight 3 singles draw at the Saint Joseph's Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Maguire Courts, getting the title by way of a victory over sophomore teammate Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) in the final match. Villanova also reached the championship matches in each of the two main draws in doubles play on the final day of this weekend's local tournament.
In the Flight 1 doubles bracket junior Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) reached the championship match with a pair of victories on Sunday, while junior Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) and freshman Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) advanced to the finals of the Flight 2 doubles draw.
The weekend overall was a successful one for the Wildcats but Levine came away with the team's only title after winning four consecutive singles matches over the past two days. He started play on Sunday with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Evan Andrews of Delaware in a semifinal matchup, which took place simultaneously to another semifinal match in which Rosengren knocked off Paul Stauskas of Drexel by scores of 6-4, 6-1. The all-Villanova final went to Levine in straight sets (7-5, 6-4).
O'Brien and Donaldson won a pair of doubles matches to begin play on Sunday before falling by a narrow margin in the finals. They defeated Nolan Gelman and Jason Derene of Delaware by an 8-4 count in a quarterfinal match and posted an 8-3 decision over Alex Holland and Henry Jang-Milsten in the semifinals. The championship match featured O'Brien and Donaldson playing against Troy Beneck and Adam Lawton of Delaware, with the Blue Hens winning by an 8-6 score.
In the Flight 2 doubles bracket Peyton and Seitz had a similar path to the championship after scoring wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. They easily defeated Johan Vila and Pedro Gimenez of Hofstra, 8-2, in their first match on Sunday morning and then advanced to the final with an 8-4 victory over Andrews and Alex Sweet from Delaware. Peyton and Seitz were then edged by an 8-6 margin in the championship by Jeganathan Srinivasan and Dan Hansen of Drexel.
One of the best matches played on Sunday featured junior Matt Colonnese (Marietta, Ga.) in the quarterfinals of the Flight 4 singles draw. He faced Andrew Berman of Penn and was defeated by the smallest of margins. The scores were 7-5, 6-7 (5), 13-11 in Berman's favor.
The last tournament of the fall season for the Wildcats is the Quinnipiac Invitational in two weeks (October 5-7).
