First Day of Action is Complete at Saint Joseph's Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--A busy weekend at the Saint Joseph's Invitational got started with matches on Friday afternoon and Villanova came away with three wins in both singles and doubles action at the Finnesey and Maguire Courts. In all the Wildcats were 3-1 in singles matches and 3-2 in doubles matches to begin the weekend.
Junior Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) played a hand in three of the six total wins for Villanova on Friday, including a straight sets singles win over Brant Switzler of Monmouth. Peyton won by scores of 6-3 and 6-2 in the Flight 2 singles draw while also teaming up with freshman Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) for a pair of doubles wins in the Flight 2 doubles bracket.
Peyton and Seitz were dominant in each of their matches on Friday, beginning with an 8-2 decision over Jonathan DeFrancesch/Kyle Rosen of Bucknell in the first round. The second round was even better as Peyton and Seitz scored an 8-1 win over Dan Barrus and Kevin Gates of the host Hawks squad to advance to the quarterfinals of their bracket. Next up for Peyton and Seitz will be a match on Saturday against the Hofstra pair of Johan Vila and Pedro Gimenez.
Sophomores Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) and Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) were also first round singles winners. Rosengren defeated Jason Sisti of Saint Joseph's in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) in the first round of the Flight 3 singles draw and Donaldson outlasted Brian Stefanowicz of Lafayette for a 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 victory in the opening round of the Flight 4 bracket.
The other doubles victory for the Wildcats came from Donaldson and junior Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) in the first round of the top doubles draw. They defeated Freddy Marcinkowski and Ramy Bekheit of Monmouth by an 8-6 decision and advanced to a second round matchup against Ismael Lahlou and Vim De Alwis of Penn. That match got underway early on Friday evening but was ultimately suspended due to darkness.
Villanova returns to the courts on Saturday morning to continue both singles and doubles play in the four singles and two doubles brackets. Results from all of the matches played on Saturday will be posted on Saturday night when play has concluded for the day.
