Michael Rosengren and Matt Colonnese Win Championship at Villanova Invitational
Sept. 19, 2011 VILLANOVA, Pa. - Freshman Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Colonnese (Marietta, Ga.) each won their singles matches in the final round and the pair came out as the champions of the Villanova Invitational held at the West Campus Tennis Courts this weekend. In a tournament draw that featured 16 doubles pairs Rosengren and Colonnese emerged in first place while three other pairs from the Wildcats also registered strong results in the team's opening weekend.
The tournament draw featured four doubles pairs from Villanova, Franklin & Marshall and TCNJ, while Monmouth had three entries and Swarthmore one in the four-round invitational. The host Wildcats had the top composite results of the five schools competing, with the first place doubles pair as well as two tandems that tied for fifth place and another pair that came in 12th overall.
In the fourth and final round on Sunday afternoon Rosengren and Colonnese clinched the championship by each winning their singles matches against opponents from Franklin & Marshall after losing the doubles match against the Diplomats' Ross Silverberg and Will MacArthur.
Silverberg and MacArthur took the doubles match by a final score of 8-3 but Rosengren and Colonnese rebounded to each win their singles matches in straight sets. Rosengren knocked off Silverberg (6-4, 6-4) and Colonnese defeated MacArthur (6-3, 6-1).
The fifth place match in the tournament was a push, as two Villanova teams would have been matched up against each other. Sophomore Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) and freshman Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) formed one half of that matchup, while sophomore Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) and freshman Mark Miller were the other half.
In the 11th place match freshman Chris Cua (Wellesley, Mass.) and senior Liam Bohonnon (Westport, Conn.) faced off against Francis Jedlinski and Carl Jedlinksi from Monmouth, with the Hawks claiming all three matches. Cua and Bohonnon lost the doubles match, 8-4, and each was beaten in straight sets in singles play. Cua lost to Francis Jedlinski (6-0, 6-1) and Bohonnon was defeated by Carl Jedlinski (6-1, 7-5).
With its first weekend of competition in the books, Villanova has two remaining tournaments on the fall schedule. The first is this coming weekend when the Wildcats play locally in the SJU Invitational in Philadelphia, hosted by Saint Joseph's.
