Wildcats Have Two of the Top Four Finishers at Villanova Invitational
Sept. 18, 2012
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The final round of the Villanova Invitational took place at the West Campus Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon and the host Wildcats had their four doubles pairs finish in second, fourth, tied for fifth and 10th in the tournament standings for the weekend. Freshman Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) and junior Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) had the top result for Villanova with a second place tournament finish.
Seitz and Peyton were narrowly defeated, 2-1, by Ross Silverberg and William MacArthur of Franklin & Marshall in the championship matchup. The doubles point went to Silverberg and MacArthur by an 8-4 count but Peyton evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 singles win over MacArthur. The match came down to three sets between Seitz and Silverberg, with the latter pulling out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory.
In the third place match junior Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) and sophomore Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) were also defeated, 2-1, in a similarly competitive match against opponents from Monmouth. O'Brien and Donaldson lost their doubles match, 8-4, against Freddy Marcinkowski and Ramy Bekheit but O'Brien swept Marcinkowski in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). The match between Donaldson and Bekheit was decided by a tiebreaker and Bekheit eventually won a 2-6, 6-1 (10-4) decision.
Sophomore Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) won the only contest completed in a fifth place contest between the Wildcats and Monmouth when he scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over Brant Switzler. Rosengren and classmate Tim Abbracciamento (Robbinsville, N.J.) did not play their doubles match against Switzler and Jason Prezant, and Prezant also withdrew from his singles match with Abbracciamento.
Villanova sophomore Mark Miller (Englewood, Colo.) and freshman Max Levine (Lubbock, Texas) were in the back draw of this weekend's tournament and came in 10th overall after a 2-1 loss to Franklin & Marshall in the match for ninth place. Miller and Levine lost to Nolan Bacchieri and Doug Kaplan by a score of 9-7 in doubles action, while both singles matches went to tie-breakers. Miller held off Bacchieri by a final of 5-7, 6-4 (10-8) but Kaplan eventually outlasted Levine for a 3-6, 7-5 (15-13) victory.
As a team the Wildcats combined to go 10-7 (.588) in doubles matches and 30-9 (.769) in singles match during their home tournament over the weekend. The tournament, held on campus for the second straight year, was also the team's first competition of the season.
