Seitz and Peyton Advance to Championship Match at Villanova Invitational
Sept. 18, 2012
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The tournament bracket for the Villanova Invitational created the possibility of matches between teammates and that took place in two different matchups in third round action on Sunday morning. In a semifinal matchup the Wildcats tandem of freshman Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) and junior Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) won two of three matches against teammates Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) and Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) to advance to the championship match.
Villanova entered four doubles teams into this weekend's tournament and the team's respective pairs will be playing for first, third, fifth and ninth places when competition closes late Sunday afternoon. Seitz and Peyton will play opponents from Franklin & Marshall with the tournament championship on the line after Peyton clinched a spot in the title match with a singles victory over Donaldson.
Seitz and Peyton posted a slim 9-8 (7-3) doubles victory over O'Brien and Donaldson to open their semifinal matchup. Peyton then defeated Donaldson in singles play by a 6-2, 6-1 score while O'Brien tallied a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Seitz in their match. O'Brien and Donaldson will play against a duo from Monmouth in the third place match.
Also playing in the main draw of the tournament bracket during the third round were sophomore Mark Miller (Englewood, Colo.) and freshman Max Levine (Lubbock, Texas), who notched a 3-0 sweep over Chestnut Hill to reach the fifth place match. Miller and Levine won their doubles match over Kevin Taylor and Anthony Moore by a final score of 8-5 and each proceeded to win their singles match in straight sets. Miller knocked off Taylor (6-0, 6-2) and Levine registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Moore.
In the tournament's back draw sophomores Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) and Tim Abbracciamento (Robbinsville, N.J.) reached the ninth place match with a 2-0 win over Swarthmore. They easily defeated Preston Poon and William Lennon, 8-3, in doubles to start their matchup and Rosengren clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Poon in singles play. The match between Abbracciamento and Lennon was not played because the outcome of the overall matchup had already been determined.
The final matches of the weekend were set to begin on Sunday afternoon.
