Sept. 15, 2013

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova's Thomas O'Brien and Kelly Donaldson defeated teammates Chris Seitz and Bradley Noyes to win the men's tennis 3rd Annual Villanova Invitational championship Sunday at the West Campus Tennis Courts.

"Our players executed well in their first action of the season," Villanova head coach Brad Adams said. "I am happy the way our doubles team looked all three days, something we hope to continue as the year goes on. It was great to see our young players continue to grow and get better."

O'Brien and Donaldson continued their dominance in doubles action after earning the doubles point with an 8-5 victory. Sophomore Seitz would make his senior captain (O'Brien) fight for the victory after forcing him to two tiebreakers in singles action. O'Brien would eventually take both tiebreakers and capture the title with a 7-6 (8), 7-6 (3) victory. He would go undefeated and not drop a single set throughout the tournament.

In the third place matchup, Wildcats teammates Max Levine and Ryan Peyton would challenge Chestnut Hill's Yann Pham and A.J. Moore. In a back-and-forth doubles match that saw several lead changes, Pham and Moore would win the tiebreaker and the match, 9-8 (5).

Villanova would go on to regroup with a chance at third place for the tournament. Levine continued his stellar play in singles, defeating Moore, 6-2, 6-4. With the match tied at 1-1, Peyton would capitalize on his first set shutout (6-0) and win a second set tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), to ensure Wildcats players finished first, second and third in their own tournament.

The Wildcats will play in two more tournaments during the fall season. Next up is the Saint Joseph's Invitational Sept. 20-22 in Philadelphia, Pa.
