Men's Tennis Impresses in Day One of Fall Season Opener
Sept. 13, 2013
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova men's tennis team enjoyed success in its first action of 2013 when it hosted its 3rd Annual Villanova Invitational Friday at the West Campus Tennis Courts. Players from Chestnut Hill, Randolph-Macon and Lafayette joined the Wildcats to form two different draws in a 32 player tournament.
The Main Draw consisted of a "two-and-one" format. The invitational began with 16 doubles matches which were followed by the doubles competitors facing their opponents from the other team in singles matches. The team that won at least two of the three contests, advanced in the main draw, while the losing team moved to the back draw.
The Wildcats came out on fire, dominating all-five of their doubles matches they competed in and four of the five Villanova pairs would go on to advance past the first round.
"Our doubles play definitely looked impressive today," Villanova head coach Brad Adams said. "I am pleased the way we came out the gate and continued to keep our poise in the first action of the season."
At the first court, Tom O'Brien and Kelly Donaldson picked up where they left off last season by handling Chestnut Hill's Manuel Ceniceros and Sammy Atri, 8-1. Senior captain O'Brien would go on to shutout Ceniceros, 6-0, 6-0, during singles action.
At court two, Tim Abbracciamento joined Mike Rosengren to slide past Ryan Byrd and Michael Baxter of Randolph-Macon, 8-3. Following doubles action, both Abbracciamento (6-1, 6-3) and Rosengren (6-1, 6-2) never looked in trouble and would go on to win in straight sets.
After cruising through doubles play, Chris Seitz was victorious over Chestnut Hill's Kevin Taylor, 6-3, 6-4. Seitz's partner, newcomer Bradley Noyes won his first career singles match with the Wildcats, 7-5, 6-0, over Devin Hampton of Chestnut Hill.
Last year's freshman phenom Max Levine, and senior Ryan Peyton looked to be in mid-season form Friday afternoon. Levine handled Brantley Stein of Randolph-Macon, 6-1, 6-0, while Peyton eased past Connor Hoerr (Randolph-Macon), 6-0, 6-1.
The Wildcats will return to action Saturday at 8:30 a.m. for day two of the Villanova Invitational.
