Wildcats Fall to Georgetown 4-3 in Big East Consolation Match
April 22, 2005
TAMPA, Fla. - Senior Ricardo Baraldi (Delray Beach, Fla.) was victorious in his matches at first doubles and second singles on Friday, but Villanova (7-15) ended its season with a 4-3 loss to Georgetown (7-8) in a consolation match at the Big East Championship on the University of South Florida campus. The Wildcats finish their season with a sixth-place conference finish.
Baraldi teamed with classmate Aaron Kusza (Wallingford, Conn.) to take their match at first doubles by a 9-8 (5) score. However, the Hoyas took the other two doubles matched and claimed the critical doubles point to start the match. Junior Sean Gallagher (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman Dimitry Chimerakis (North Palm Beach, Fla.) lost the decisive doubles match at the second spot, falling 8-4. In the first match to be completed, the freshman duo of Scott Fahrendorf (Reno, Nev.) and Charlie Farmer (Newport Beach, Calif.) lost 8-3.
Baraldi won a three-set match at second singles, where he defeated Scott Maucher 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Also victorious in their singles matches were Fahrendorf and Gallagher at the fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Fahrendorf defeated Eric Conrad 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 and Gallagher topped Scott Faust 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.
Georgetown, which had defeated the Wildcats 5-2 earlier this season, needed to go the distance to complete the match. Erik Bildman outlasted Kusza in a match at first singles that decided the outcome. Bildman was victorious 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
