Men's Tennis Falls To Notre Dame At BIG EAST Championships

Tampa, Fla. - The Villanova men's tennis team headed south on Friday, traveling to Tampa, Florida to take part in the 2007 BIG EAST Championships hosted by USF. In the quarterfinals, the #8 seed Wildcats were matched up with #1 seed Notre Dame. It would be the Fighting Irish that came out on top, posting the 4-0 win to advance to the semifinals. In doubles action, Villanova's Dimitri Chimerakis and Sean Daly fell to Notre Dame, 8-2, while Alex Leeser and Charles Farmer were also defeated by Notre Dame, 8-4. The third doubles match did not finish. The Fighting Irish picked up three singles victories to close out the match. Sean Daly also competed in the singles portion of the match, and was defeated, 6-0, 6-4. Notre Dame's Brett Helgeson got past Villanova's Scott Fahrendorf, 6-0, 6-2 to earn the second singles point for the Irish. The third and final single's point for Notre Dame came from Andrew Roth, who defeated Villanova's Sumanth Chittajallu by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Villanova now moves to the consolation bracket, where they will take on the #4 seed DePaul Blue Demons starting at Noon on Saturday. The Blue Demons were upset by #5 seed St. John's, 4-3.
