March 24, 2013
JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Junior Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) scored the clinching point with his win at No. 1 singles and Villanova (4-5) notched its third straight win with a 6-1 decision against Saint Peter's (2-6) at the Yanitelli Bubble on Saturday afternoon. O'Brien also teamed up with sophomore Kelly Donaldson (Broomfield, Colo.) for a win at the No. 1 doubles spot.
O'Brien and Donaldson defeated Carlos Carrera and Alex Frakes, 8-6, in doubles play and the Wildcats swept the doubles matches. Sophomore Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) and junior Matt Colonnese (Marietta, Ga.) teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, while freshman Chris Seitz (Pennington, N.J.) and junior Ryan Peyton (Newport Beach, Calif.) were 8-6 winners at the No. 3 spot against Oliver Bellomi and Fabian Valdiviezo.
In singles play the Wildcats won five of the six matches and had clinched the victory when the matches at the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 1 spots had been completed. O'Brien defeated Carrera at first singles by set scores of 6-4 and 6-2, as all but one of the singles matches were decided in straight sets. Peyton defeated Marko Knezevic at No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) and Rosengren was victorious over Bellomi (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 5 spot.
The other wins for Villanova came from freshman Max Levine (Lubbock, Texas) at No. 4 singles and sophomore Mark Miller (Englewood, Colo.) at the No. 6 spot. Levine went to a tiebreaker to defeat Luccas Coutinho (6-1, 4-6, 10-8) and Miller cruised past Valdiviezo (6-2, 6-0).
On Sunday afternoon the Wildcats are back in action at home when they take on NJIT at 2:30 p.m. at the West Campus Tennis Courts.
