Villanova Men's Tennis Drops Three Matches in Spring Break Road Trip to California

Villanova, Pa. - Villanova men's tennis team traveled to California for a spring break road trip on March 3-7. The men's team competed against Vanguard University, University of California-San Diego, and Pt. Loma Nazarene on the road swing.

Villanova men's tennis had a difficult time in California as they fell in all three dual matches of the week. Against Vanguard the team battled to a 3-6 loss, nationally ranked UCSD cruised through the Wildcats 9-0, and Pt. Loma Nazarene also defeated Villanova 3-6.

On March 3 against Vanguard University the 'Cats scored team points in the number three doubles match and the number 5 and 6 singles matches. The team of Justin Goulet (Yardley, Pa. / Holy Ghost Prep) and Brendan Mahoney (Naples, Fla. / Cmty. School of Naples) won 8-3, while Carl Fenzl (Oldsmar, Fla. / Berkley Prep) and John Toppel (Los Altos, Calif. / Bellarmine Prep) won their matches 7-5, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-0 respectively.

Next up for the 'Cats was a meeting with nationally ranked University of California-San Diego. Villanova suffered a tough loss falling 9-0 to the #20 Tritons. Toppel faired well in the number six singles match battling Sean Nagel to the end in a 6-3 and 6-4 loss.

To round out the men's spring break trip the 'Cats met Pt. Loma Nazarene dropping the match 3-6. Gaining victories for Villanova was Fenzl, 6-3 and 6-1, and Lucas Kaster (Minneapolis, Minn. / De LaSalle), 6-4, 6-7, and 6-3. In doubles play the team of Ricardo Baraldi (Delray Beach, Fla. / Cardinal Gibbon) and Fenzl managed an 8-3 win.

The losses bring Villanova's record to 2-7 on the season. Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to the University of Maryland on March 15, with scheduled start time at noon.
