O'Brien and Rosengren Win Matches in 5-2 Loss at Fairfield

STAMFORD, Conn. - Sophomore Thomas O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) scored a win in the top singles match and freshman Michael Rosengren (Sharon, Mass.) won at fourth singles but Villanova (0-3) fell by a score of 5-2 to a talented Fairfield (4-0) team at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Club on Saturday night.
O'Brien registered the first win at No. 1 singles of the season for the Wildcats with a three-set tiebreaker against Dan Sauter. O'Brien rallied after losing the first set 6-4 to take the second set 7-6 (6) and then went on to win the tiebreaker 10-5.
Four of the six singles matches went to three sets and Rosengren went the distance to defeat George Tioutine at fourth singles. Rosengren followed the same pattern as O'Brien, losing the first set by a 6-4 count before coming back to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
The Stags swept the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point and then scored wins at the fifth, second and third singles matches to clinch the outcome before Villanova got on the board.
Next up for the Wildcats are two matches on the road next Saturday. Villanova faces New Jersey Tech at 9 a.m. and St. Peter's at 2:30 p.m.
