Wildcats Drop Pair of Matches in Season Opener
Jan. 18, 2014
HANOVER, N.H. - The Villanova men's tennis team (0-2) dropped a pair of matches to Bryant University (1-1) and Dartmouth College (2-0) in its 2014 season opener Saturday afternoon at the Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, N.H.
"We did not play well today," Villanova head coach Bradley Adams said. "The losses today will be a good test for our team, to see how we bounce back against adversity."
After Bryant was shutout, 7-0, earlier in the afternoon against host Dartmouth, the Bulldogs responded with a 6-1 victory over the Wildcats to move to 1-1 on the young season. Bryant avenged last season's 4-3 loss to the Wildcats at the Villanova Tennis Complex.
Dartmouth followed up their shutout victory over Bryant with a 7-0 sweep over Villanova to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Big Green who has their sights set on the Ivy League Title has not dropped a set in their two matches.
Villanova's top duo, Kelly Donaldson and Thomas O'Brien, who were perfect in 11 matches during tournament play, dropped their first match together since April 19, 2013. The pair fell 6-2 to Cameron Ghorbani and Branden Tannenbaum, the No. 38 ranked duo in the country.
Last season, the Wildcats dropped their first three matches of the season, including five of their first six before stringing off seven consecutive victories to end the regular season. The squad finished 13-10 and received a No. 6 seed at the BIG EAST tournament, the program's highest to date.
"Luckily we have a long break before our next match and we will use that time to practice and get better as a group," Adams added. "I believe our senior leadership will help us moving forward and have the team ready against Delaware."
Villanova will enjoy a three weeks break before returning to the courts Feb. 9 on the road against Delaware.
