Oscar Umar Named to BIG EAST All-Rookie Squad
Nov. 10, 2011
SHORT HILLS, N.J.--Freshman midfielder Oscar Umar (Accra, Ghana) was rewarded for his play this season with a selection to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team, as announced on Thursday night. The annual conference awards were doled out at the league's postseason banquet at the Hilton Short Hills, with two semifinal matches in the BIG EAST Championship on tap for Friday evening.
Umar has been one of the key players for a surging Wildcats team this season and currently ranks second on the team with four assists, while also recording two goals and a total of eight points. Six of his eight points came during regular season BIG EAST play, including an assist in a 3-1 win over then-No. 12 St. John's on October 19, the first game in a stretch that has seen Villanova go 4-2 and post the first two playoff victories in program history.
During the season Umar has been equally adept at setting up his teammates or finding offensive chances of his own. He leads the team with 42 shots taken on the year and in a match at Rutgers during conference play scored the first two goals of his collegiate career on his only two shots on goal in the contest.
The selection of Umar to the All-Rookie squad makes this the third consecutive season that the Wildcats have had a first-year player garner All-Rookie honors, evidence of Villanova being one of the BIG EAST teams on the rise. This is the fifth straight year overall that the Wildcats have had at least one all-conference selection and the eighth time in the last nine seasons that at least one Villanova player has merited postseason recognition.
Tomorrow night's semifinal matchup against St. John's kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., with the game being televised live on the CBS College Sports Network.
