VILLANOVA, Pa. - On Saturday the Villanova Wildcats take a six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) with them into a match against BIG EAST Red Division rival Cincinnati. The contest begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Villanova Soccer Complex and will be streamed live through the Nova Nation All-Access Pass at villanova.com.
Cincinnati brings a 5-6-3 overall record to the Main Line but is 2-1-1 in conference play. The Bearcats defeated VU last season 2-1 in Ohio. The Bearcats are a stingy defensive team that has allowed just 14 goals in its 14 games in 2012.
"This is a good, tough, physical defensive team," says VU head coach Tom Carlin of Saturday afternoon's opponent. "They do a good job of staying behind you and making things difficult, especially in the attacking realm.
"We expect it to be a chippy Big East game. These are two very solid defensive teams which will be trying to break each other down."
A key for Villanova, which seeks to bolster its 9-2-2 overall record, will be patience when facing a system that can slow high-powered attacks.
"They can frustrate you by cutting away your attacking options," notes Carlin. "As the game goes on, do they wear you down or are you able to put the pressure on them? If we can put the pressure on them by setting the tone early, that can benefit us."
Saturday is Alumni Day at the Villanova Soccer Complex as the program welcomes back its former student-athletes. At halftime, the memory of Steve Grello, VU class of 1990, will be honored in a brief ceremony. Grello was a former Wildcat team captain who was a two-time Academic All-BIG EAST selection.
