Villanova Downed By No.1 Connecticut
October 4, 1998 Traveling to Storrs, Conn., on Sunday, Oct. 4, to face the No.1 nationally ranked University of Connecticut Huskies, the Villanova University men's soccer team fought valiantly but fell to Connecticut 2-0. With the loss, the Wildcats record dropped to 2-8-0 overall and 0-6-0 in Big East Conference play. The Huskies scored first in the opening half, as Maurizio Rocha beat Villanova goalie J.D. Allen drilling a shot from 20 yards out into the lower right corner off an assist from Ryan Brown at the 27:33 mark. Just under three minutes later, Connecticut padded its lead as Bobby Rhine headed the ball into the net off a deflection from a Luis Arauz shot to send the Huskies into the half with a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats would go on to hold the nation's top team scoreless for the remainder of the contest, but Villanova could not get the ball past Connecticut goalie Matt Chavlovich and dropped their sixth Big East contest 2-0. Chavlovich tallied the shutout for the Huskies in goal stopping five shots on the afternoon. In goal for the Wildcats, Allen saved eight shots but took the loss. Villanova will get back into action on Wednesday, Oct. 7, hosting the Seton Hall Pirates at 3:30 p.m.
