Villanova, Pa. - Chris Edgar, a freshman midfielder from Mahwah, N.J., was named Big East Conference Rookie of the Week, it was announced today.

Edgar became the second Villanova freshman to score a pair of goals in one game on Sunday afternoon at West Virginia (classmate Tim Maciejak scored twice in a 2-2 tie with Providence on Sept. 22). With the Wildcats trailing 1-0 at intermission, Edgar scored his first goal of the season in the 48th minute to knot matters at one. Then, less than 10 minutes later, Edgar again came through, heading the ball into the twine to boost Villanova to a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish. (The second goal was originally credited to No. 17, Tim DiGuilio, but was changed today. DiGuilio does receive an assist on the play.)

Since returning from an early season injury that caused him to miss five games, Edgar has been very strong in the midfield for Wildcat coach Larry Sullivan. He has made the first three starts of his career and responded in a major way on Sunday afternoon.

Edgar wasn't the only 'Cat to be honored this week. Junior Joe Caroulo of Berwyn, Pa., was named co-Philadelphia Soccer Seven Player of the week for assisting on both Villanova goals at West Virginia. Caroulo shared the award with Sam Chamovitz of the University of Pennsylvania.

The win lifts Villanova's record to 3-5-1 overall, 1-3-1 in the Big East. The Wildcats host Georgetown on Oct. 4 at noon.
