Villanova Blanked By No. 7 St. John's
September 29, 1998 Trying for its first victory in Big East Conference play against the No. 7 nationally ranked St. John's Red Storm, the Villanova University men's soccer team was shutout by their Big East counterparts 4-0. With the loss, the Wildcats record dropped to 2-7-0 overall and 0-5-0 in conference play. The Storm broke open the scoring at the 20:31 mark of the first half, as Paul Cusano scored on a penalty kick beating Wildcat goalie Matt Malek. Less than five minutes later, St. John's (6-1-2, 4-1-1) forward Pablo Budna scored the first of his two goals in a 42 second span to make the score 3-0. The Red Storm wasn't done, however, as they went on to score one more goal on a Michael Taylor blast to go into intermission up 4-0. The Villanova defense would hold St. John's scoreless in the second half, but weren't able to crack the Storm defense as they went on to lose 4-0. In goal for the Red Storm, Jeffrey Stoklosa got the shutout saving two shots. Roaming the net for Villanova, Malek and sophomore J.D. Allen combined for five saves.
The Wildcats will resume play on Sunday, Oct. 4 traveling to Storrs, Conn., to face the University of Connecticut Huskies at 12 noon.
