VILLANOVA, Pa. - Sophomore midfielder Oscar Umar has been named Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week, it was announced today.
Umar, a native of Accra, Ghana, played a pivotal role in Villanova's 2-1 victory Friday night over Hartford in a game played at Penn Park on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. With VU trailing in the 73rd minute, Umar served a ball into the middle of the field that junior William Cason blasted into the top shelf of the Hawks' goal to knot the contest at one.
Less than three minutes later, Umar struck again, this time off a set piece. Freshman Sean Sheridan served Umar the ball and the sophomore calmly fired a shot into the net for his first game-winning goal of the season. The win also extended Villanova's season opening win streak to four games (the streak was halted on Sunday in a 1-0 loss to Air Force).
Umar now has two goals and an assist in five games this season.
The Wildcats are idle until this Friday when they return to Penn's campus to meet the host Quakers in a Philly Soccer Six match at 7:30 p.m. on Rhoads Field.
