'Cats Look to Extend Fast Start this Weekend in Center City
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats will take the short journey to Center City Philadelphia for a pair of games this weekend at Penn Park on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
On Friday night, the Wildcats try to extend their season opening three-game winning streak when they meet the Hartford Hawks on the synthetic surface of Dunning-Cohen Champions Field. The Hawks dropped one goal decisions to West Virginia and Penn State on the season's opening weekend before rebounding with victories over Fordham (1-0) and Central Connecticut State (2-1) last weekend.
Hartford is led in scoring by David Berhardsson, who has tallied one goal and a pair of assists in his club's first four contests of 2012.
Villanova is paced by Kyle Soroka, who has three goals in the team's first three games. Goalie John Fogarty posted his first shutout of the season in last Saturday's 1-0 victory at Colgate and junior back William Cason was named to this week's BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Meanwhile, Penn hosts Air Force at 7:00 p.m. Friday on Rhoads Field in the same athletic complex adjacent to I-76.
On Sunday, Villanova meets the Falcons at 1:00 p.m. on Dunning-Cohen Champions Field. Air Force brings an 0-2-1 record with it to Philadelphia. The Academy has scored just one goal in three outings thus far.
"We came through a stretch with some early travel in good position," states Villanova head coach Tom Carlin of wins over Manhattan, Stony Brook and Colgate. "Now, we need to continue to show the commitment to our approach this weekend in Philadelphia. We will be tested by Hartford and Air Force."
Fans attending the games this weekend can access the field by entering via the intersection of Chestnut and 31st streets. Public parking is available for a fee in a lot adjacent to the field.
