VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats first trip through the new look BIG EAST Conference highlights the 2013 Men's Soccer schedule announced today. The Wildcats, who tied a program record for wins in 2012 with a 12-6-2 mark, will open the 2013 regular season on the road at the University of New Mexico on Friday, Aug. 30.
"The BIG EAST has been known as one of the toughest soccer conferences in America and we are excited to build on that in our new format," stated Villanova head coach Tom Carlin. "The outstanding competition we will face in the BIG EAST will form the foundation for what will be a very challenging schedule for our team."
Villanova will face two of the four teams that reached the College Cup semi-finals in BIG EAST action this season. The Wildcats make their first visit to Omaha to take on Creighton on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Bluejays were eliminated by eventual NCAA champion Indiana 1-0 in the College Cup semifinals last December. On Saturday, Nov. 9, the Wildcats will wrap up the regular season with a trip to College Cup Finalist Georgetown.
The Wildcats will host three other 2012 College Cup qualifiers in BIG EAST play when Marquette (Oct. 5), St. John's (Oct. 12), and Xavier (Nov. 3) come to the West Campus Soccer Complex. Villanova will also welcome BIG EAST rival Providence (Oct. 23) to its home pitch as well as non-league foes Hartford (Sept. 3), Marist (Sept. 7) and Lehigh (Oct. 16).
Villanova will face Philadelphia Soccer Six rivals Temple (Sept. 21 in Ambler, Pa.); Penn (Sept. 24 at home); and La Salle (Oct. 2 in Philadelphia) in 2013 as well.
The Wildcats will be led by seniors Dylan Renna and Daniel Gonzalez, along with junior Oscar Umar, a third team All-BIG EAST choice last season. However, they must replace a departed senior class that included second team All-BIG EAST selection Kyle Soroka, stalwart center back Kyle McCarthy and goalkeeper John Fogarty.
Villanova will also host a pair of pre-season scrimmages at its home on West Campus. Drexel visits the Wildcats on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at 1:00 p.m. while West Virginia will be in town on Friday, Aug. 23.
