Men's Soccer Defeated by Notre Dame
NOTRE DAME, Ind. --- The Notre Dame men's soccer team remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play as the Irish posted a 1-0 victory over Villanova at Alumni Field on Friday night. Alan Woods had the game-winning goal as Notre Dame recorded its third straight shutout and sixth of the season.
Woods scored on a header off a Scott Wells corner kick 12:11 into the contest. With the win Notre Dame improves to 5-2-2 overall with its third straight victory and 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST. Heading into the contest, the Irish were tied for third place in the BIG EAST regular-season standings with Villanova and Rutgers. Rutgers, a 4-2 winner at Pittsburgh on Firday evening, is Notre Dame's opponent on Sunday, Sepetember 28 at 1:00 p.m. when the Scarlet Knights make their first-ever appearance at Alumni Field.
The shutout was the fourth for the Irish against a BIG EAST opponent. In four outings and 390 minutes, Notre Dame has yet to give up a goal.
Greg Velho recorded his sixth complete-game shutout as he recorded four saves in the contest. Notre Dame dominated the contest outshooting the Wildcats 14-7 in the game. Villanova goalkeeper Matthew Westfall made six saves in goal for Villanova.
With the loss, Villanova falls to 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the BIG EAST.
