Villanova Loses to Temple, 2-1
PHILDAELPHIA, Pa. - In their second game of the season after an opening day 1-0 loss to Lafayette on Saturday, Aug. 30, Villanova lost another heartbreaker at Temple 2-1 this afternoon. The loss drops the Wildcats to 0-2-0 on the season, and 0-1-0 in the Philadelphia Soccer 7.
The Owls opened up the scoring with a Ryan Haney goal just over seven minutes into the contest. The Wildcats rallied as senior Jim Corcoran scored Villanova's first goal of the season with 15 minutes left to go in the half. Corcoran's goal, assisted by sophomore forward Donavan Hornsby, tied the game at 1-1.
The second half remained just as physical a defensive battle as was the case in the first half. The game stayed tied at two until Haney scored his second goal of the game with 35 minutes remaining in regulation. Temple's defense then held Villanova scoreless despite several scoring opportunities by the Wildcats.
The Wildcat defense was led by senior goalie Matthew Westfall who saved six shots for the second straight game. For the Owls (1-0-0), goalie Kenny Clark stopped seven shots in helping Temple win their first game of the season. Villanova next plays away on Friday, Sept. 5, against LaSalle at 3:30 p.m.
