Lafayette Defeats Villanova, 1-0
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- After nearly eighty minutes of scoreless soccer at the Villanova Soccer Field, Lafayette's Jake Ross scored off a Wildcat turnover and a Leidy Klotz assist to give the Leopards a 1-0 victory in the first game of the season for both teams.
In the first half, Villanova and Lafayette combined for 14 shots, but neither could find a way to score in a physical battle that took Wildcat senior Paul Miraglia to a head injury. The second half began with much of the same, but with 10:20 left in the game, Ross slipped a shot past Wildcat goalie Matthew Westfall to give the Leopards the lead.
The Lafayette (1-0) defense held off several late Villanova scoring opportunities for the victory, holding the Wildcats scoreless despite allowing eighteen shots on goal. Westfall led the Wildcat defensive charge with six saves, while Lafayette goalie John Barry had 12 saves including seven in the second half.
