Villanova Ties Syracuse, 1-1
VILLANOVA, Pa.--- After playing 1-0 games the past two seasons, in contests split by both teams, Villanova and Syracuse broke the streak tying 1-1 in double overtime on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Villanova Soccer Field on the campus of Villanova University. With the tie, the Wildcats brought their overall record to 4-4-4 and their Big East Conference record to 2-2-3, picking up one point in the Big East Conference standings.
Syracuse (4-6-1, 2-4-1) broke open the scoring at the 20:32 mark of the first half, as Michael Jacobson beat Wildcat goalie Matthew Westfall (Medford, NJ/ Bishop Eustace) off a breakaway to give the Orangemen a 1-0 lead. With just under 10 minutes to go in the half, sophomore Conor Porter (Donegal, Ireland/ Raphoe H.S.) took a pass from senior James Corcoran (Westfield, NJ/ Westfield) and lofted a shot over Syracuse goalie Kevin Bacher for his first goal of the season, to tie the game at 1-1 going into intermission.
In the second half, Westfall made two diving saves and tipped another over the crossbar to hold the Orangemen scoreless. Strong defensive performances were also had by junior Jason Doherty (Boca Raton, FL/ Olympic Heights) and sophomore David Bradford (Winston Salem, NC/ Mount Taboe). With the Wildcats also unable to score, however, the game went into overtime tied at one.
In overtime, the defenses once again ruled with each goalie saving one shot to send the game into a second extra session. In the second overtime, Westfall tallied his eighth and ninth saves of the contest and the Villanova defense warded off several Orangemen scoring opportunities as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Villanova travels to Seton Hall to resume their Big East schedule against the Pirates on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 3:00 p.m.
