Villanova Tops Providence, 1-0

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- In a Big East defensive battle that went scoreless into double overtime, Wildcat sophomore Dave Francalangia (Berlin, CT/ Berlin H.S.) scored at the 112:49 mark to give Villanova a 1-0 victory on Friday, Oct. 24, in a game played at the Villanova Soccer Field. With the victory, Villanova improved to 6-5-4 overall and 4-2-3 in the Big East, picking up two points in the conference standings.

The game began as a physical war right off the bat, with both defenses taking the opposition out of their normal offensive flow. Villanova defenders Jim Curtin (Oreland, PA./ Bishop McDevitt) and Lew Domke (Washington, IN/ Chaminade) held Providence to only one first half shot, and the game went scoreless into intermission.

In the second half, Wildcat senior goalie Matthew Westfall (Medford, NJ/ Bishop Eustace) stopped five shots, fending off several Friar scoring opportunities. Providence goalie Daniel Pires also stopped five second half shots, however, sending the game to overtime at 0-0.

Despite several scoring opportunities in overtime by both teams, neither squad was able to capitalize. The Villanova defense behind Kevin Mullin (Southhampton, PA/ LaSalle) and Brian Conolly(Telford, PA./ Landsdale Catholic) kept the ball out of the hands of the Friar offense, sending the game to yet another extra session.

With 7:11 left in the second overtime period, Villanova senior James Corcoran (Westfield, NJ/ Westfield) served up the ball down field to Francalangia, who beat Pires to give the Wildcats a 1-0 victory. The game-winning goal was the second in three games for Francalangia, who extended Villanova's Big East unbeaten streak to three games. Westfall finished the contest with seven saves for the Wildcats, tallying his fourth shutout of the season.

Villanova stays at home to resume their Big East schedule on Sunday, Oct. 26, against the Boston College Eagles at 1 pm.
