SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -Down 1-0 with eight minutes to play, Villanova scored to goals in just over two minutes to beat Seton Hall 2-1 on Wednesday, Oct.15, in a game played at Seton Hall.
With the victory, the Wildcats picked up two points in the Big East Conference standings, as they improved their conference record to 3-2-3 and their overall record to 5-4-4.
In a game played in rainy, soggy conditions, the first half was a defensive struggle, typical of Big East Conference play. The Wildcat defense held the Pirates scoreless in the first half, behind freshman Jim Curtin and senior goalie Matthew Westfall who tallied six saves in the half.
A strong Pirate defensive effort however, also held the Wildcats scoreless on the other end, sending the game to intermission tied at 0-0.
At the 67:25 mark in the second half, the Pirates scored the game's first goal on a breakaway by Frank Collado, assisted by Peter Gonzalez. With just under eight minutes left in the contest, the Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 as sophomore Donavan Hornby took a pass from senior James Corcoran and netted his team leading fifth goal of the season.
With 5:52 left in a game which looked to be headed towards overtime, the Wildcats staged yet another rally with sophomore Dave Francalangia scoring the go-ahead goal, off an assist from senior Barry Smith.
The Villanova defense held strong in the remaining minutes to bring home the 2-1 victory.
Smith, along with sophomore Conor Porter led an outstanding Wildcat midfield that turned in outstanding performances on both sides of the ball. On defense, seniors Kevin Mullin and Paul Miraglia kept the Pirate offense in check throughout the game for Villanova, who moved into a four-way tie for second place in the Big East Conference with the victory.
The Wildcats travel to the University of Maryland on Saturday, Oct 18, to take on the Terrapins at 7 pm.
