Villanova, Pa. - Virginia Tech (10-5-2 overall, 3-4-2 Big East) midfielder Fred Silva scored in the second minute of the first overtime to lift the Hokies to a 2-1 victory over the Villanova Wildcats (5-11-0 overall, 3-7-0 Big East) in a contest played here at the Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon.

The contest was tight throughout. Virginia Tech enjoyed the better scoring chances in the first half but Wildcats goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa.) helped keep the Hokies off the board. The game was scoreless at intermission.

Virginia Tech broke through at 69:26 when Rob Smith chipped a ball to Bobby O'Brien, whose shot eluded Teesdale to make it 1-0.

Villanova forced the issue and capitalized after a Virginia Tech foul in the midfield. Senior David Jones (London, England) dropped the ball into the penalty area off the free kick where Colin Raws (Malvern, Pa.) nudged it with his head to junior Stephen Leaman (Lancaster, Pa.). Leaman headed the ball into the net at 80:17 to even matters.

Then it was Silva's turn. Virginia Tech's Bobby O'Brien stole a clearing attempt and fed Silva, who dribbled by a defender, waited for Teesdale to commit, and then lined a low shot into the net at 91:31 for the win.

Villanova returns to action this Wednesday when it travels across town to meet Philadelphia University in a Philadelphia Soccer Seven duel.
