Men's Soccer Posts 3-0 Shutout Over Monmouth
Oct. 16, 2001
Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats scored a pair of goals in the game's first ten minutes and were never headed en route to a 3-0 victory over the Monmouth Hawks (3-10-1 overall) in a contest played here on Tuesday afternoon.
Some excellent passing in the box helped Villanova (4-7-0 overall, 2-5-0 Big East) seize the early advantage. The play began when sophomore Scott Rodemer (Dowington, Pa.) sent a corner kick into the box. Junior Steve Leaman (Lancaster, Pa.) headed the ball in the direction of the net where senior Tony Rod collected it and deposited it into the net to make it 1-0 at the 4:27 mark.
Villanova struck again when Scott Rodemer got behind the defense and dribbled in on goalkeeper Frank Gullace. Rodemer's shot beat Gullace and the Wildcats held a 2-0 lead at 9:27.
Monmouth's best scoring chance on the afternoon came late in the second half. Anthony Viscariello sent a shot from close in that beat Wildcats goalkeeper Sean Teesdale (Blue Bell, Pa.) but Koji Hamada headed the ball away from the net to preserve the shutout.
Another corner kick led to the final goal as Leaman took a pass from Joe Caruolo (Berwyn, Pa.) and beat Gullace at the 86:38 mark.
Teesdale made three saves in posting his second shutout of the season.
Villanova takes a two-game winning streak into Saturday's Big East match with West Virginia at the Soccer Complex. Kickoff is 1:00 p.m.
