Men's Soccer Drops a 2-0 Decision to Georgetown
Oct. 15, 2003
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Philadelphia native Dan Gargan made his return to the Delaware Valley a memorable one by scoring a goal that sparked Georgetown (5-7-2 overall, 2-5-0 Big East) to a 2-0 Big East Conference victory over Villanova (7-6-1 overall, 2-5-0 Big East) on Wednesday afternoon.
On an afternoon where wind gusts reached 50 miles per hour, it was difficult for both sides to guide long shots. Yet junior Jonathan Lopuski (Montville, N.J.) nearly got Villanova on the scoreboard first in the fourth minute when he blasted a shot from 25 yards out. However, Georgetown goalkeeper Tim Hogan got a hand on the ball and deflected it over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.
Although Villanova dominated much of the early action, it was Georgetown that cashed in a scoring opportunity. Trevor Goodrich won a ball in the right corner and fired a nice cross to Gargan near the top of the box. Gargan drilled a low shot past Wildcat keeper Craig Bald (Edgewater, Md.) at 24:23 to stake the Hoyas to a lead.
The contest remained 1-0 at intermission.
Both teams had scoring chances early in the second half but failed to convert. Villanova's best chance to knot the game came in the 80th minute when the 'Cats were awarded a free kick two yards outside the box. But the Hoyas wall did a nice job of allowing Hogan to see the shot and he made the save on a shot off the foot of senior Scott Rodemer (Doylestown, Pa.).
A Georgetown counter attack as Villanova pressed for the tying score accounted for the final tally. Ricky Schramm set up Danny McAnally in the box and McAnally deposited the ball in the right corner of the net to secure the Hoyas victory.
Hogan earned the shutout by making seven saves. Bald also was credited with seven saves.
Next up for Villanova is a trip to Piscataway, N.J., where the 'Cats take on Rutgers on Oct. 22 in a contest that begins at 7:00 p.m.
