Men's Soccer Ties No. 13 St. John's 1-1
Oct. 13, 2004 VILLANOVA, Pa. - Andre Schmid picked up a rebound in front of the net with 1:03 left on the clock in regulation and drove a shot past Villanova goalkeeper Jason Friel (Dublin, Pa.) to help No. 13 St. John's (7-3-3 overall, 4-1-2 Big East) earn a 1-1 tie with Villanova in a Big East men's soccer game played here on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats (5-3-4 overall, 3-2-2 Big East), though, earned their first point against St. John's since a 1990 victory.
Villanova picked up the first score of the day at 19:22. Senior Jonathan Lopuski (Montville, N.J) sent a corner kick to the top of the box to freshman Danny DeMasters (Littiz, Pa.). DeMasters sent a ball towards senior Chris Edgar (Las Vegas, Nev.), who took the feed and sent a shot past Red Storm goalie Bill Gaudette to make it 1-0.
The Wildcats carried most of the play in the first half, outshooting St. John's 11-8 in the period. None of St. John's shots were on net.
In the second half, both teams had scoring chances. However, it wasn't until a frantic final 90 seconds that the Red Storm drew even. Andrei Gotsmanov blasted a shot from near the top of the box at Friel, who made the save but could not control the rebound. Schmid was in the right place at the right time, however, and blasted the rebound into the right corner of the net to tie the match at one.
St. John's, ranked No. 13 in the nation, forced Friel to make three saves in the overtime but the Wildcats young goalie was equal to the challenge. Gaudette, meanwhile, was forced to make a pair of saves in the second overtime, including one on DeMasters.
"Our guys are very down right now," said Villanova head coach Larry Sullivan. "They think we're a little further along than we are at this point. We're still a very young team and games like this are part of our learning curve. But we're getting there. Sooner or later games like this won't escape us."
Villanova travels to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown this Saturday at noon.
