Men's Soccer Drops 5-0 Decision To Penn State
Sept. 6, 2001
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Penn State men's soccer team (2-1-0, Big Ten 0-0) defeated Villanova (0-2-0 overall, Big East, 0-1-0), 5-0 Thursday night at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lion defense did not allow the Wildcats a shot while the Lion offense proved to be more than Villanova could handle. Penn State out-shot the Wildcats 14-0, and had 13 corner kicks to Villanova's zero. The Nittany Lions have out-scored their opponents 8-4 in the second half through three games. Junior midfielder Brent Jacquette (Wallingford, Pa.) scored the only goal of the first half unassisted on a shot from the top of the box at 30:11. In the second half, the Lions came out on fire. Senior Derek Potteiger (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) scored his second goal of the season from the left corner of the box off an assist from freshman Chad Severs (Ocean City, N.J.) at 54:35. Severs then scored his second goal of the season off a redirected corner kick from senior Ricardo Villar (Sao Paulo Brazil) at 67:53. A minute later, off of another Villar corner, senior Ken Lear (Weston, Fla) headed the ball into the back of the net, making the score 4-0. Junior Jorma Makipaa (Lahti, Finland) added the final Lion goal of the night, heading the ball over the goalkeeper in the 77th minute for his second career goal. Injuries continue to plague the Wildcats. Villanova played without its top scorer from 2000, sophomore Chris Edgar, who was injured at Notre Dame. Villanova returns to its home turf on Sunday when the 'Cats face defending NCAA champion Connecticut at the Villanova Soccer Stadium. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
