Westfall Named Big East, Philadelphia Soccer 7 Player-of-the-Week
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova senior goalie Matthew Westfall was named the Big East Defensive Player-of-the-Week and the Philadelphia Soccer 7 Player-of-the-Week for his outstanding play last week. The Wildcats tied the No. 10 nationally ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights 1-1 in double overtime on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and shutout Connecticut 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 21.
On Wednesday against Rutgers, Westfall saved two shots in the second overtime in helping the Wildcats shut down the usually potent Scarlet Knight offense. For the day, Westfall had a seaso-high 16 saves. Against the University of Connecticut on Sunday, Westfall recorded his third shutout of the season and second in Big East play, as the Wildcats won 1-0. He saved nine shots, giving him 47 for the season, as Villanova (3-2-2) increased their unbeaten streak to five games.
Westfall, from Bishop Eustace High School in Medford, N.J., has a .904 save percentage on the season, and is second in both the Mid-Atlantic Region and Big East Conference in goals against average at 0.66.
