Men's Lacrosse Announces 2010 Captains

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Head coach Mike Corrado and the Villanova men's lacrosse team has announced senior Mark Scioscia, senior Bryan McCartney, junior Chris Ficke and junior Brian Karalunas as team captains for the 2010 season. All four captains will serve in the role for the first time and were each elected in a vote by their teammates and coaches. Corrado states, "These four young men are not only excellent players but have developed into outstanding leaders. I am excited to have them lead us into the 2010 season." Scioscia, a senior attackman from East Hampton, N.Y. recorded 5 assists, 21 goundballs and 9 goals including two game-winners in 2009. For his career, he has tallied 23 goals, 10 assists and 47 groundballs. McCartney, a senior defenseman from Doylestown, Pa. has been a three-year starter for the Wildcats. He was named to the 2007 CAA All-Rookie Team his freshman season and has continued providing VU with solid play throughout his career. In 2009, McCartney started and played in all 17 contests while recording 27 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers. Ficke, a junior defenseman from Madison, N.J. started every game of the 2009 season while notching 38 groundballs and creating 7 caused turnovers. For his career, Ficke has recorded 50 groundballs while playing in 26 games. Karalunas, a junior defenseman from Dewitt, N.Y. has been a two-year starter for Villanova. In 2009, Karalunas guided the team to a CAA championship en route to receiving several accolades of his own by being named a 2009 USILA All-American and 2009 CAA Defensive Player of the Year. The Wildcats open the 2010 season on Feb. 13th when they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State at 1 p.m.
