Redshirt junior midfielder Devin McNamara and junior attackman Christian Cuccinello were recognized for their achievements both on and off the field during the 2017 season when they were named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team. McNamara and Cuccinello were voted onto the team by the sports information directors of the Philadelphia area colleges and universities.
This is the eighth time in the last nine years that the men’s lacrosse team has had at least on player earn a selection to the Academic All-Area squad.
Student-athletes are eligible for Academic All-Area consideration by being a significant contributor to their teams while also maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher. McNamara graduated in May degrees in in Finance and Accounting in the Villanova School of Business, and is now enrolled in the Masters of Finance program. Cuccinello, who will be a senior in the fall, is an Economics major and is interning at iQ Media this summer.
The Wildcats finished the season with a 9-6 overall record and 4-1 in BIG EAST play. McNamara, who transitioned from the starting attack line to midfield early in the season finished with 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists. Cuccinello finished second on the team in points with 64, he netted 33 goals and dished out 31 assists.
Joining them on the Academic All-Area team is Scott Allison of Widener, Saint Joseph’s Chris Blewitt and Austin Smith, Timmy Brooks of Cabrini, Marc Bushong of Gwynedd Mercy, Ben Frost and PJ Jackson of Haverford, Penn’s Kevin Gayhardt and Connor Keating, Cam Marsh of Swarthmore, and Chestnut Hill’s Thomas McDermott. Bushong was named Academic All Area Performer of the Year.
